About the Role

VA San Diego Healthcare System seeks a Supervisory Medical Instrument Technician (Cardiac Catheterization) for the Cardiology Section. The role oversees technicians and works with interventionalists, electrophysiologists, nurses, clinicians, and clerical staff to ensure high-quality care, efficient coordination, accurate diagnostic and therapeutic results, and strong patient satisfaction.

What You'll Do

  • The Supervisory Medical Instrument Technician (Cardiology Manager) oversees daily operations, staffing, training, and quality assurance across multiple cardiology diagnostic and procedural laboratories within the Medicine Service.
  • The role supervises MITs in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, Electrophysiology Laboratory, Cardiac Ultrasound Laboratory, Exercise Treadmill Testing Laboratory, Heart Station and Holter Laboratory, and, where applicable, ICU Blood Gas Laboratory.
  • Major duties include, but are not limited to the following: Directs, assigns, and evaluates daily work of MITs across all cardiology laboratories.
  • Conducts annual and biannual performance evaluations and competency assessments.
  • Initiates corrective or disciplinary actions when necessary and ensures adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Manages recruitment, placement, promotion, and reassignment activities.
  • Oversees timekeeping, leave approval, call schedules, and emergency coverage assignments.
  • Develops training objectives and curriculum for MIT staff across multiple subspecialties.
  • Provides classroom and hands-on training on cardiovascular procedures and equipment.
  • Authors standard operating procedures, training documents, and competency tools.
  • Performs ongoing assessment of staff capability and provides targeted feedback.
  • Establishes local quality criteria and ensures alignment with accreditation agency standards.
  • Monitors data accuracy, documentation completeness, and adherence to the quality assurance plan.
  • Oversees quality control programs in all laboratories, including equipment/instrument validation and staff competency documentation.
