About the Role

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

What You'll Do

  • Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional The General Mental Health Outpatient Social Worker (GMHSW) is assigned to Mental Health Service at the James E.
  • Van Zandt Medical Center and surrounding VA locations.
  • Major duties include, but not limited to: The GMHSW completes thorough psychosocial assessments and includes pertinent information in all the required areas of functioning in order to determine appropriate diagnoses and other treatment-related conclusions.
  • GMHSW ensures that clinical assessments are found to be appropriate to the referral question and conclusions are found to be reasonably substantiated by interviews, observations, historical data collateral data (i.e. from outsides sources such as other treatment providers, family members, etc.) and other data when indicated.
  • The GMHSW provides a DSM diagnosis to determine the psychosocial functioning and needs of Veterans and/or their families.
  • GMHSW must be able to utilize this assessment in facilitating the Veteran's maximum use of treatment for attainment of the highest level of independence that is possible and practicable.
  • The GMHSW serves as the subject matter expert on VA and community resources, collaborating with other services providers.
  • GMHSW coordinates community-based services, including information and referral for services from other VA programs, other government programs, and community agency programs.
  • The GMHSW provides crisis intervention services, seeking to address causation as well as presenting complaints.
  • GMHSW makes rapid assessments and develops crisis management plans to return Veterans to a state of homeostasis including maintaining Veteran in the home, admission to acute, psychiatric, or short term/long term placements.
  • In the event of a medical or psychiatric emergency, the GMHSW follows the Mental Health Service or facility protocols.
  • The GMHSW establishes and maintains effective therapeutic relationships with Veterans and their families.
  • The GMHSW provides consultation and education to Veterans and their families related to VA, community resources, VA benefits and specialty programs, and advance directives.
  • GMHSW acts as an advocate on behalf of the Veteran when it serves the best interest of the Veteran/family.
