About the Role

The Social Work Service Mental Health Care Line Inpatient Program (MH IP) is composed of two inpatient mental health units located at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC). The mission of MH IP is to provide effective and timely services that are respectful of and responsive to the needs of the veterans and reflect the mission and values of the medical center.

What You'll Do

  • Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Duties of the Social Worker (MH IP) may include, but are not limited to: Performs case finding functions and outreach, identifying and screening patients for psychosocial needs.
  • Possesses the knowledge and ability to independently implement treatment modalities, provide counseling or psychotherapy for individuals, families and groups.
  • Conducts psychosocial assessments and makes psychosocial diagnoses based on assessment.
  • Develops treatment plans in collaboration with the veteran/family and with the interdisciplinary treatment team.
  • Possesses the skills to offer psychosocial interventions and measures outcomes to interventions.
  • Coordinates internal and community-based services, including information and referral for additional services from other VA programs, other government programs and community agency programs.
  • Identifies patients at high-risk for potential discharge problems.
  • Leads discharge planning in order to begin planning and resolving barriers to discharge before the discharge date.
  • Possesses working knowledge and experience in use of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities and treatment procedures in order to facility patient and family education re: chronic conditions.
  • This includes acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries, common medications and their effects/side effects, and medical terminology.
  • Provides supportive psychotherapy, crisis intervention, family psychotherapy and formal individual evidence-based psychotherapy as part of the overall treatment plan decided by the team.
  • Establishes and maintains effective therapeutic relationships with veterans and their families.
  • Provides consultation services to other staff regarding the psychosocial needs of veterans and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care and adherence to treatment plan.
  • Work Schedule: Sunday - Thursday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm (subject to change based on the needs of the facility) Recruitment/Relocation Incentive (Sign-on Bonus): Not Authorized Permanent Change of Station (Relocation Assistance): Not Authorized Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases.
