About the Role

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

What You'll Do

  • The VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS) has an immediate opening for a Pharmacist Program Manager - Pharmacy Benefits Manager to work at the Palo Alto Division.
  • The Pharmacy Benefits Manager (PBM) position is a unique leadership position within Pharmacy Service that manages programs, not people.
  • This position is unique to VA formulary and fiscal management, thus is only being announced for Internal candidates who have similar experience and knowledge.
  • Duties and Responsibilities include, but not limited to: Leadership duties: Serves as a resource throughout the pharmacy service and other clinical services.
  • Facilitates and conducts process improvement activities within pharmacy service; uses effective interpersonal skills, systems thinking approach, flexibility and adaptability, organizational stewardship, technical, leadership and strong communication skills.
  • Pharmacoeconomic Program Management duties: Leads the group of three Pharmacoeconomic Pharmacists in the design, coordination, implementation and management of pharmacy-based programs aimed at optimizing the cost efficiency of selected medications/pharmacotherapy throughout the organization.
  • Leads monthly Pharmacoeconomic team meetings.
  • Tracks all cost-savings initiatives through to completion and one-year post-implementation outcomes (clinical and financial).
  • Tracks all prior authorization drug consults, decision support order sets (DSOS), and medication use criteria for annual review and updates.
  • Conducts medication use evaluations including pulling data utilizing SQL; and precepting pharmacy residents (PGY1 and PGY2).
  • Pharmacy Benefits Management duties: Tracks/trends/reports pharmacy budget expenditures monthly.
  • Projects and submits next annual pharmacy budget proposal.
  • Coordinates/tracks/trends attainment of National and VISN performance measures and metrics with the performance measure champions and provides guidance and mentoring to ensure meeting the metrics.
  • Leads the monthly Pharmacy Performance Measure Council (PPMC) meetings.
