About the Role

Columbia VA Medical Center is seeking an experienced and dynamic Nurse Practitioner (NP) Cardiology. Ideal applicants are those who want to contribute to the growth and development of a VA academic hospital program. As a Licensed Independent Provider, the NP practices autonomously & in coordination with health care professionals & other individuals. Supports the seamless transition of care between MMU visits and the main cardiology clinic. This position requires traveling up to 85% of the time.

What You'll Do

  • The Cardiology Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a professional nurse with advanced clinical knowledge and competence to provide professional assessment, coordination, and planning of multiple health care services, emphasizing quality, timeliness, and the advancement of the VA mission.
  • The NP is a licensed independent provider, holds clinical privileges, and practices in collaboration with other health care professionals to provide direct and indirect care.
  • Clinical core privileges of the Cardiology NP include the management, treatment, and ordering, performing, and interpreting labs, radiography, and other diagnostic tests for acute and chronic cardiac disorders of the adult population.
  • The NP will be responsible for providing care for cardiac patients in the outpatient setting, acting on behalf of the patients to assure that necessary clinical services are received and that progress is being made toward Cardiology team care goals.
  • The NP will be responsible for clinical documentation for outpatient services.
  • Additional Cardiology NP functions will include: Providing high-quality care, increasing access, and improving outcomes for Veterans Performing cardiopulmonary assessments, including heart and lung auscultation, pulse and blood pressure monitoring, inspection of lower extremities for edema and arterial pulses, and assessment of wound sites post-cardiovascular procedures.
  • Evaluating and following up on established cardiac patients on MMU and in outpatient cardiology clinics.
  • Developing and implementing an individualized plan to achieve optimal population health and disease management.
  • Participating in and supervising stress testing under cardiologist oversight, including pharmacologic agents such as adenosine, dobutamine, and atropine.
  • Coordinating care and following up on diagnostic tests such as, but not limited to, ECGs, Holter Monitors, stress tests, echocardiogram, Cardiac CTs and Cardiac MRIs.
  • Initiating referrals/consults to specialty services; serving as a VA and community liaison Providing patient and family education on cardiovascular management.

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
  • English Language Proficiency.
  • In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.

  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
