About the Role
This position is for a Nurse - Nursing Officer of the Day (NOD) in Nursing Operations at Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center in Saginaw, MI.
What You'll Do
- →The fundamental role of the Nurse Officer of the Day (NOD) is to monitor, provide, and ensure compliance with established quality care and customer service standards which support the organization's mission, vision, core values and strategic objectives.
- →The NOD shifts are variable and must support the organizational needs to provide24/7 coverage.
- →Frequently rounds on all units.
- →Receives unscheduled leave calls for Nursing Services and communicates in a timely manner utilizing established protocols.
- →Responsible for evaluating the needs of the next shift and securing appropriate resources and making staffing decisions as soon as possible.
- →Responds to Code Greens, Rapid Response, and receives up to date frontline communication per Emergency Management, Code Reds, Code Oranges, Code White, Bode Silver, and Code Black situations.
- →The NOD ensures that the appropriate staff are following established protocols for all codes.
- →Duties include, but are not limited to: Executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to the management of complex patient care.
- →Demonstrates the ability to lead and organize the delivery of care to assure continuity of care and peer accountability for practice, including access to care and discharge planning.
- →Expert in the delivery of patient care and serves as the facility nursing expert at all hours to support, provide and facilitate emergency medical support throughout the facility.
- →The incumbent serves as the facility expert for all patient care areas in identifying escalating medical crises, environmental factors, and in allocating staffing resources appropriately throughout the facility to meet care needs.
- →Uses advanced clinical knowledge and judgment to promote staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes.
- →Function as an expert in clinical practice and/or areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities for nursing.
- →Systematically evaluates current practice and formulates outcomes for groups of patients and/or organizational processes within an area of expertise.
Requirements
- ✓Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- ✓All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- ✓Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
- ✓Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- ✓Subject to background/security investigation.

- ✓Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment.
- ✓Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
- ✓You may be required to serve a probationary period.
