The Altoona VAMC is a healthcare facility that provides acute, intermediate, and long-term care 24 hours a day, seven (7) days a week and on holidays. The Medical Laboratory Technician independently carries out procedures, handles routine problems, and corrects errors according to accepted laboratory policies under supervision of the Assistant Laboratory Manager.
What You'll Do
- →Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Major duties include, but may not be limited to: Accession and receipt of laboratory specimens into the laboratory information computer system.
- →Verification of correct specimen labeling, processing and distribution.
- →Blood collection by venipuncture; biologic specimen processing; instruct, assist, and answer questions relative to patient specimen collection.
- →Collection of samples for reference testing, entering orders for reference laboratory testing.
- →Performance of point of care testing such as urine pregnancy testing and urine dipstick testing.
- →Collection of clerical functions such as answering the phone or communicating with nursing/providers with any testing questions/concerns; monitoring consumable inventory employee drug screens (including, but not limited to: pre-employment, courtesy and random drug screens).
- →May be required to work at the main facility or travel via government vehicle to any of the affiliated Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOCs) (with additional courier duties) Performs other duties as assigned.
- →Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.
- →Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
- →Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Requirements
