This position performs as a Medical Technician in the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service (P&LMS) at the Sioux Falls Veterans Administration Health Care System, performing a variety of functions including accessioning specimens into computer system; collecting and evaluating patient specimens; answers questions relative to specimens; instructing and assisting patients; and preparing specimens to be sent to reference labs.
What You'll Do
- →***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Using proper patient identification and sample labeling.
- →Collecting blood or urine specimens and ensures safe, non-traumatic processes are used to maintain patient safety and assure specimen quality.
- →Performing blood collection using venipunctures, arterial punctures and capillary finger sticks with a minimal number of failures, patient bruising, or required repeat collection, ensuring that samples are submitted to the clinical laboratory with the least possible delay.
- →Performing specimen collection in the emergency room, hospital rooms, extended care rooms and outpatient specimen collection area.
- →Performing specimen performed independently without supervision; however, supervisor and medical technologists are available for consultation.
- →Following standard operating procedures for guidance in specimen collection.
- →Identifying tests that require special handling conditions and appropriately performs proper specimen collection.
- →Preparing specimens, such as labeling, and decanting.
- →Accessioning patient tests order for main laboratory and microbiology, remove canceled tests.
- →Performs other related duties as assigned.
- →Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:00 am-2:30 pm with rotating weekends and holidays Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
