About the Role

Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) for Veterans Health Administration (VHA) are part of the Central Arkansas Veterans Health Care System and primarily located at the John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas but also includes a location at the Eugene J. Towbin Healthcare Center in North Little Rock, Arkansas.

What You'll Do

  • Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Duties of the MST (Sterile Processing) include, but are not limited to: Maintains current knowledge of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which document the processes and procedures for cleaning, disinfection, sterilization and preparation of reusable medical equipment (RME) appropriate to this position.
  • The incumbent will be able to demonstrate their ability to utilize an acceptable proficiency in the use of RME appropriate to this position.
  • Provides sterilization, preparation, supply items and RME decontamination and distribution support for the medical center.
  • The term "supply item" as used in this functional statement refers to disposable and reusable items for patient care including instrumentation (scissors, forceps, retractors, etc.), RME (suction machines infusion pumps, etc.), surgical trays and sets and various other items that could be processed or assembled through the Preparation and Decontamination areas of Sterile Processing Service.
  • Receives contaminated critical and semi-critical RME in decontamination area and may receive noncritical equipment in the decontamination area as well.
  • Disassembles the RME and follows the standard operating procedures (SOP) for the correct cleaning method.
  • These include but not limited to ultrasonic cleaners, mechanical washers, cart washers and chemical cleaning/decontamination agents as determined by manufactures instructions.
  • Inspects, prepares, and assembles instruments and determines the appropriate sterilization method and packaging, including but not limited to steam, Sterrad, Steris, ethylene oxide (EtO), and high-level disinfection reprocessors.
  • May also prepare operating room case carts based on the surgical schedule.
  • Removes soil, blood, tissues fragments, body fluids and other contaminants by wiping, soaking, rinsing and scrubbing.
  • Inspects packages for indications of proper sterilization, assembles basic sets and trays used throughout the medical center including those used in the operating room.
  • Performs segments of work pertaining to the decontamination, sterilization and inspection of reusable medical equipment (RME).
  • Completes segments of work pertaining to the assembly of basic sets and trays for use in the medical center.
  • Operates equipment involved in sterilization processes.
