About the Role

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

What You'll Do

  • Functions or Scope of Assigned Duties Clinical Duties (100%) a.
  • Screening/Assessment: Under supervision from Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), begins to develop assessment skills in information gathering, problem identification, diagnosis, treatment planning, implementation, evaluation, and follow-up.
  • Fully utilizes the current DSM in making diagnoses and formulation of treatment goals and application of appropriate clinical interventions. b.
  • Delivers services both in person and via video technology. c.
  • Treatment Planning/Interventions: Ability to work with patients and families who are experiencing basic emotional, medical and social problems, utilizing individual, group, and family counseling skills.
  • Work with more complex problems is done under close supervision.
  • With guidance from the LMFT supervisor, ability to assess the psychosocial functioning and needs of patients and their family members, and to formulate and implement a treatment plan, identifying the patient's problems, strengths, weaknesses, coping skills, and assistance needed.
  • As evidence-based psychotherapy trainings become available, the GS-9 SUD Therapist will have the opportunity to attend trainings and begin to develop specialized knowledge of a wide variety of individual, group, or family counseling interventions for substance use disorders.
  • Treatment approaches include but are not limited to cognitive-behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, motivational interviewing, and motivational enhancement therapy. d.
  • Conducts approximately 8 SUD groups per week focusing on skills and psychoeducation under supervision of LMFT supervisor. e.
  • Effectively communicates with and utilizes community agencies to facilitate treatment, discharge planning, and continuity of care. e.
  • Possesses knowledge and understanding of existing relevant statutes, case laws, ethical codes, and regulations.
  • Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing, with people from varied backgrounds.
  • Serves on an interdisciplinary team with focus on the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and relational functioning of individuals, groups and families and on the counseling approaches, strategies, and techniques that will best help patients function effectively. g.
