The primary purpose of the Licensed Practical/License Vocational Nurse (LPN/LVN) is to perform assigned duties in a manner that promotes quality health care, positive customer service, and the maintenance of an environment committed to serving the Veteran.
What You'll Do
- →Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Major duties include, but are not limited to: Institutes emergency measures including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, as necessary.
- →Administers medications consistent with Medical Center Policies (MCP) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
- →Follows policies and procedures for LPN and Intravenous (IV) therapy after taking the LPN IV class from nursing education.
- →Discontinues peripheral IVs.
- →Applies and removes dressings including bandages, slings, wet to dry dressings, and wound packing.
- →Sets up auxiliary equipment such as oxygen and suction therapy under direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) or licensed independent practitioner (LIP).
- →Retrieves a variety of specimens such as urine or sputum.
- →Provides direct patient care to include answering call lights, assisting with activities of daily living (ADL), hygiene, post-mortem care, measuring and recording vital signs, pain, height, weight, and reporting abnormal findings to RN immediately.
- →Observes acute and subtle changes in patient's condition, reports findings to the RN based on understanding of the therapeutic regimen, and documents observations and care provided in the patient's electronic health record (EHR).
- →Performs active and passive exercises, assists with ambulation, and encourages activities of daily living.
- →Completes and/or reinforces basic patient/family teaching, supports patient with physical limitations during their stay as needed.
- →Transports inpatients throughout the medical center, as needed, for medical testing, procedures, pharmacy, etc.
- →Also assists with transport of the body after death.
- →Cleans wheelchairs and other non-critical Reusable Medical Devices (RMD) after each use with appropriate cleaner per manufacturer instructions.

- ✓Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
