Ophthalmology Technicians in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) support Ophthalmologists in diagnosis, treatment, prevention, follow-up care and patient counseling. The Full Performance Health Technician (Ophthalmology) performs a range of standard, but complex, diagnostic procedures, assists during clinic-based surgical procedures, educates patients and legal representatives, assists with the education of medical students and residents.
What You'll Do
- →Major duties include, but are not limited to: Calibrates technical ophthalmology screening instruments.
- →Gathers comprehensive patient physical history and chief complaints including medications, allergies, and family history.
- →Tests visual acuity at both distance and near, with and without correction.
- →Measures eyeglass prescriptions using manual/automated lensometer.
- →Performs pupil evaluations, including size, shape, symmetry, light reaction, and swinging flashlight test.
- →Conducts basic refractometry using auto refraction or existing glasses in a phoropter.
- →Administers ocular medications such as anesthetics, dyes, dilating drops, cycloplegic drops, or antibiotics.
- →Measures intraocular pressure using Goldmann applanation tonometry.
- →Conducts measurements of corneal thickness (pachymetry) and curvature (keratometry/topography).
- →Performs intraocular lens calculations using devices like IOL Master.
- →Administers automated visual field testing with various perimetry machines.
- →Conducts external and fundus photography.
- →Utilizes optical coherence tomography (OCT) for anterior segment, retina, and optic nerve imaging.
- →Screens and triages potentially urgent ocular conditions.

- ✓Must be proficient in written and spoken English.

- ✓Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
