About the Role

The position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, House Office Buildings, Members' Wellness Center women's program. Responsible for administering programs in exercise, general nutrition, stress management, and other preventive health measures to Members of Congress.

What You'll Do

  • The tour of duty for this position is Monday-Friday, 6:00 a.m-2:30 p.m.
  • Note: During the weeks when Congress is in-session, the hours may be adjusted 7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
  • Develop personalized strategies for promoting and coaching health, fitness, and restorative self-care for Members of Congress.
  • Devise and administer exercise programs designed, on request, for individual Member's specific needs.
  • Conduct fitness screening for Members prior to their entrance into certain exercise programs.
  • Conduct health and physical fitness assessments prior to developing an individual exercise plan, as appropriate.
  • Assessments may include but are not limited to cardiovascular exercise capacity, blood pressure evaluation during rest and exercise, pulse rate during rest and exercise, body composition analysis, measures of strength, balance, mobility, flexibility, posture, and functional capacity.
  • Evaluate, as permitted by scope of certification, the degree of acute or chronic injury or medical condition to develop a first aid/treatment plan or medical referral.
  • Lead exercises individually and in group settings.
  • Teach individuals' techniques in self-awareness, self-monitoring, and self-management of bodily functions like pulse rate, blood pressure, levels of exertion, and thresholds of discomfort.
  • Instruct techniques of specialized group fitness activities.
  • Provide alternative programs if current programs prove unsuccessful.
  • Maintain bulletin board postings and other effective, appropriate mediums about current health-related information for education of the Members.
  • Instruct Members in the proper use of the various equipment and facilities, such as treadmills, electronic and computer programmed stationary cycles, air resistant stationary cycles, arm cycles, stair stepping machines, elliptical step machines, rowing machines, skiing machines, various modes of strength training machines, therapeutic whirlpools, and other fitness devices as appropriate.

Requirements

  • Must be certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and skilled in the use of the Automatic Electronic Defibrillator (AED).
  • Proof of certification must be provided if selected.
  • There is no educational requirement for this position.
  • A master's degree in Exercise Science is desired for the GS-11 grade level.
  • A national exercise certification with the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) or with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) is desired.
  • You must be able to pass a drug test.
  • Your resume and question responses must demonstrate competencies.
  • You must meet the definition of specialized experience.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
