About the Role

The Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in Smithsonian Institution Exhibits (SIE), Office of Under Secretary for Museums & Culture at the Smithsonian Institution (SI).

What You'll Do

  • Exhibit Specialist (Technical Coordinator) is repsosible for the full range of technical and creative skills in the design, development, production, and installation of museum exhibitions, involving projects of considerable complexity, requiring specialized techniques and the use of a variety of materials.
  • In this position, you will: Exercise technical independence in the production and development of exhibition projects, including structurally accurate casework, artifact mounts, graphics, and other exhibit elements designed to enhance the presentation of valuable museum artifacts.
  • Prepare and produce finished exhibit elements, working from conceptual ideas, scale layouts, detailed design drawings, or digital files.
  • Create and detail component using CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) software such as AutoCAD, Inventor, Fusion 360, Mastercam and ZBrush.
  • Work closely with the production team and with project managers, designers, curators, clients, vendors, contractors and other museum personnel.
