About the Role

The DADPCS is an advanced healthcare executive who demonstrates leadership, experience, and creative approaches to ensure the continuous and timely availability of quality nursing practice in a variety of complex patient care services and programs. They function as an executive administrator and consultant to the ADPCS to improve care for large groups of Veterans through their influence and collaboration for decisions made at the local, regional, and network levels.

What You'll Do

  • The Nurse V DADPCS is of an executive nature, comprised of complex leadership and administrative components associated with critical health care issues and activities that influence the organizational mission, health care, and policy (VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix GG.).
  • They are accountable to the ADPCS and are an integral part of the senior leadership team.
  • The DADPCS acts as a spokesperson for organized nursing services and ensures effective integration and collaboration among nursing and other professional disciplines to achieve optimal Veteran-centered organizational goals.
  • The DADPCS works closely with the ADPCS as a trusted collaborator in strategic planning, organizational assessment, program development and assists in establishing standards for the practice of nursing at the health care system level to ensure the continuous and timely availability of quality nursing services.
  • In the absence of the ADPCS, the DADPCS assumes responsibility for the oversight of Chaplain, Sterile Processing, Social Work, and Organizational Development Services, ensuring continuity of leadership and alignment with organizational values and mission.
  • Represents and upholds the office of the Associate Director of Patient Care Services at all times, acting with integrity and professionalism.
  • The DADPCS is responsible for the practice of nursing 24/7.
  • This includes all registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, and allied health staff (LPNs, NAs, etc.) regardless of line authority.
  • They have line authority over the Chief Nurses and may have additional duties assigned to them by the ADPCS.
  • The incumbent exercises preliminary approval for the following: job descriptions, policies, and procedures; standards of patient care, treatment, and services; nursing practice standards; staffing plans; functional statements; and standards to measure, assess, and improve patient outcomes.
  • The incumbent appropriately delegates activities to services assigned to them under the purview of the ADPCS.
  • The DADPCS ensures a competency process is in place to evaluate individual practice, as well as a review process for annual performance ratings.
  • The DADPCS promotes shared decision-making to ensure a healthy work environment for nursing; a spirit of inquiry and the use of evidence-based practice; and an academic environment supportive of education and research to promote the profession of nursing.
  • The incumbent champions a High Reliability Organization (HRO) founded on a collective mindfulness approach to develop evidence-based health care solutions that promote a culture or prevention and safety.

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.

  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
