This position is in the U.S. Department of Transportation, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology, Highly Automated Systems Safety (HASS) Center of Excellence's (COE). The incumbent serves as an expert in one of the modal transportation fields and has extensive experience in the interactions of that area of expertise and emergence of highly automated systems.
What You'll Do
- →As a Transportation Specialist, you will: Work with DOT Operating Administrations to review, assess, and validate highly automated systems and their safe integration into transportation systems to ensure that the safety impacts are considered.
- →Work to review, assess, and validate highly automated systems and safe integration into transportation systems.
- →Obtain and interpret transportation data and reviews planning processes with the affected agencies and/or groups.
- →Contribute to the development of strategic research plans, including identifying research needs, goals, and critical gaps.
- →Develop and review technical reports, white papers, memoranda, literature reviews, and presentations, including for both technical and non-technical audience.
- →Identify gaps and opportunities in technology, tools, information, and expertise to enable the Department to review, assess, and validate the safety of highly automated systems across all modes of transportation.
- →The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in one or more technology fields central to highly automated systems, particularly those related to transportation safety.
- →These fields may include computer science, sensor performance, human factors, autonomy stack design and integration, validation and testing, safety assurance, cybersecurity, data science, communications, and interoperability.
- →They must be capable of clearly and succinctly communicating complex technical information to nontechnical audiences, including senior officials, and excel in a dynamic, flexible work environment.
- →A passion for innovative technology and public safety through responsible development, testing, and deployment is essential.
- →The candidate will be responsible leading research and testing in emerging and advanced transportation automation technologies, ensuring that efforts are aligned with the Department's mission to enhance safety in transportation systems.
Requirements
- ✓CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you may be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which we will evaluate your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest.

- ✓SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.
- ✓GOVERNMENT TRAVEL CARD: This position involves travel.
- ✓A government contractor-issued travel card will be issued and must be retained for official business only.
- ✓BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: A background security investigation is required for all selected individuals.
- ✓Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of the security investigation and favorable adjudication.
- ✓Failure to meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
- ✓PROBATIONARY PERIOD: You must complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).
- ✓TIME-IN-GRADE: Federal applicants must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade in the competitive or excepted service in the executive branch to satisfy time-in-grade restrictions contained in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F.
- ✓Individual Occupational Requirement: Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- accounting, business administration, business or commercial law, commerce, economics, engineering, finance, industrial management, statistics, traffic management, transportation, motor mechanics, or other fields related to the position.
