About the Role

The Office of Aerospace Medicine develops and manages medical programs in support of Aviation Safety.

What You'll Do

  • Serves as a Supervisory Medical Officer, Flight Surgeon, and is responsible for the supervision of subordinate personnel in a Regional Aerospace Medicine Division Office.
  • The Flight Surgeon (FS) assists the Regional Flight Surgeon (RFS) and Deputy Regional Flight Surgeon (DRFS) in the accomplishment of all functions within a Regional Aerospace Medicine Division, including managing and directing regional aerospace medicine programs.
  • The FS assists the RFS and DRFS in developing and communicating regional positions on Aerospace Medicine policy and operational issues, as well as ensuring consistency in regional program standards, policies, and operations.
  • The incumbent assists the RFS and DRFS in the administration of the Airmen Medical Certification Program, Aviation Medical Examiners (AME) Program, Air Traffic Control Specialist and Applicant Examination Program, and the Internal Substance Abuse Program throughout the regions, as well as, provides medical advice to agency lines of business, as needed.
  • The incumbent conducts and participates in medical education programs for airmen and agency employees and assists the RFS and DRFS by administering the FAA employee substance abuse program.
  • The incumbent reports directly to the RFS and/or DRFS in all technical and administrative matters and represents the Federal Air Surgeon on all medical matters within their geographic area of responsibility.
  • The FS is responsible for personnel actions over assigned regional staff and evaluates performance of subordinate employees.
  • Approves leave, assigns work, allocates resources, employs effective decision-making to guide staff in meeting daily operational demands.
  • Provides guidance for training and developmental opportunities.
  • Additionally, resolves complaints and minor disciplinary matters, when applicable.
  • The FS administers and operates regional programs, which determine the clearance status of agency employees subject to medical standards and medical certification of airmen.
  • Conducts periodic visits to facilities to advise and assist on medical matters.
  • Supports the management of the FAA Employee Substance Abuse Program in the region.
  • Assists with implementing Quality Management System (QMS) and Safety Management System (SMS) at the regional level.
