About the Role

The Western Blind Rehabilitation Center (WBRC) is an inpatient facility located at the Palo Alto Division of the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). The primary purpose of this position is to provide supervision and subject matter expertise for provision of blind and vision rehabilitation services for visually impaired Veterans and Service Members.

What You'll Do

  • Major duties and responsibilities include, but not limited to: Establishes guidelines and performance expectations for staff, which are communicated through the employee performance management system.
  • Responsible for managing the weekly and daily staff teaching schedules and patient assignments for the department.
  • Identifies developmental and training needs for instructors and ensures that appropriate training is provided.
  • Assigns departmental duties and sets priorities and schedules for completing these duties.
  • Schedules, plans, and coordinates orientation and training programs for new employees and clinical trainees under his/her supervision.
  • Schedules regular departmental meetings to share information.
  • Coordinates annual leave and authorized absences within the section to ensure adequate patient coverage and approves or disapproves leave requests.
  • Responsible for providing coverage for veterans' treatment programs in the absence of their regularly assigned Blind Rehabilitation Specialists (not to exceed 50 percent of duty hours).
  • Ensures that staff submit all required progress notes, reports, and summaries in a timely manner.
  • The incumbent reviews all final reports for completeness and accuracy.
  • Conducts periodic evaluations of instructional plans developed by instructors for veterans assigned to them, ensuring consistency in curriculum, teaching methodology, and instructional quality.
  • Maintains program guidelines, lesson plans, and manuals that serve as prescriptive training tools for instructors working with patients in the department.
  • The incumbent coordinates and maintains a comprehensive cross-training curriculum for staff from other skill areas.
