About the Role

Safety and Occupational Health Service is recruiting for a well-qualified Safety and Occupational Health Specialist. This position will be within the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center. Incumbent will plan, direct, coordinate, and evaluate a comprehensive safety and research safety program. The program requires the development of safety criteria to eliminate or control serious hazards encountered in the construction, operation, and maintenance of research laboratories.

What You'll Do

  • Duties include but are not limited to: Serves as the principal R&D safety and occupational advisor to the John D.
  • Dingell VA Medical Center, interprets new safety and occupational health legislation, and recommends the adoption or implementation of specific policies and procedures.
  • As a consultant to Research Scientists, Principal Investigators, facility committees, and facility inquiries, the incumbent provides extensive technical guidance and assistance on diverse, complex hazardous conditions in varied research laboratories that require specialized safety approaches.
  • Plans, organizes, coordinates, and conducts a series of department-wide inspections, internal and external, such as OSHA, ORO (Office of Research Oversight), Environment of Care, Hazardous Waste.
  • Develops and conducts a safety education program to address the possible hazards associated with Research facilities and studies.
  • Monthly trainings are offered on a recurring basis.
  • Conducts on the spot training as well as one-on one specialized training for research personnel.
  • Consults and coordinates with other agency experts including industrial hygienists, physicians, scientists, environmental engineers, and fire prevention engineers in the resolution of difficult environmental hazards and the development of safety guidance and procedures.
  • Chairs the Subcommittee for Research Safety and Security (SRSS), tasked with overseeing research safety at the John D.
  • Dingell VA Medical Center and reviews initial submissions and continuing review for all research studies.
  • Participate in various facility-wide safety and environmental programs, include those involving radiation safety, green initiatives, environmental care, and emergency preparedness.
  • Responsible for compiling and submitting safety reports in response to inspections, audits, annual reviews, etc.
