About the Role

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

What You'll Do

  • The HUD VASH Program Mental Health (MH) Registered Nurse (RN) demonstrates the ability to provide mental health/medical nursing care and case management to Veterans in the community and assists Veterans in accessing mental health and medical services and VA/community resources.
  • The HUD/VASH Nurse works closely with an interdisciplinary team framework to help foster independent living through appropriate management of the client's mental illness by providing assessments, planning, interventions, and evaluation of treatment.
  • The HUD/VASH Nurse will preform nursing care functions and interdisciplinary collaborations within the outpatient mental health setting that include but is not limited to the following: Reviews patient's history and physical assessment data and incorporates analysis into the formation of the care plan and teaching plan, including caregiver/family as appropriate.
  • Incorporates the patient's life situations, home environment, responsibilities, and available resources into the care plan, assisting the person in coping with the current situation.
  • Collaborates with the Interdisciplinary Team to develop and coordinate treatment plans for patients requiring community health/social services.
  • Treatment plans will reflect mutually established community health/social goals supported by community resources.
  • Familiarizes self with community resources such as social services, transportation, etc.
  • Facilitates Healthy Living Groups once monthly in chosen locations.
  • Completes mental health, medical, and social needs assessment to refer to appropriate services within the VA continuum of care and community resources.
  • Will develop partnerships with community agencies, especially those serving those experiencing homelessness and Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Veterans, with regular contacts and communication.
  • Collaborates/communicates regularly with the Public House Authority (PHA) case manager regarding the veterans' progress toward maintaining housing and treatment goals.
  • Completes PHA documentation as necessary.
  • Rapidly intensifies emergencies, mobilizes resources, and assists in the management of patient crisis.
  • Demonstrates awareness of and leadership in performance improvement measures defined for the program and identifies problem areas for monitoring and evaluation.

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.
  • Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
  • Acceptable form(s) of identification will be required to complete pre-employment requirements (https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/form-i-9-acceptable-documents).
  • Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • You may be required to serve a probationary period.
