About the Role

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to 5 years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

  • A psychiatrist is a physician who is board certified / eligible in general psychiatrist who has a full unrestricted license to practice medicine.
  • Physicians must obtain or maintain their certifications in psychiatry.
  • All physicians must be able to informally interpret diagnostic tests in the course of clinical practice; an "official interpretation" refers to the interpretation of record.
  • A psychiatrist participates in goal-setting and treatment service planning discussions; serves on or chairs task groups or administrative committees of the service or Medical Center at the direction or approval of the Chief, Mental Health Service or designee.
  • Manages psychiatric medication for patients; evaluates the general medical suitability of clinic patients for withdrawal management, detoxification and/or psychiatric hospitalization; and assesses and intervenes with patients presenting in crisis.
  • Prescribes medications for the treatment of substance use disorders, including buprenorphine, as well as medications for other psychiatric disorders.
  • Will serve as the champion for any substance use disorder/opioid use disorder (SUD/OUD) that requires SUD/OUD expertise as a consultant for CBOC locations, in committees or process improvement projects.
  • Collaboration, coordination, and cooperation with colleagues within and across disciplines are essential skills (i.e.
  • Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP) team).

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.

  • Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • You may be required to serve a probationary period.

  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
