About the Role

This position is located within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Police Service and is responsible for VAs nationwide security, preparedness, and law enforcement operations with primary focus on protective and investigative services within the Northport VA Medical Center.

What You'll Do

  • Position responsibilities are to: Maintain a uniform presence at VA facilities and interests nationwide.
  • Enforce laws.
  • Respond to incidents.
  • Conduct investigations.
  • Conduct security assessments.
  • Monitor alarms and communication centers.
  • Sharing intelligence across VA and among local/state/Federal agencies, protect special events, training staff in prevention and emergency planning efforts.
  • Major duties and responsibilities include: Preserves peace and safeguards VA facilities, assets, and personnel, including bearing departmental firearms and responding to threats.
  • Takes action to ensure compliance and enforcement of laws on government property and federally controlled assets, including making arrests, with or without warrants, as necessary.
  • Initiates, plans, and conducts both short-term and long-term investigations into violations of federal, state, and local laws on government property, including searching for evidence, analyzing facts, following leads, and interviewing witnesses/suspects.
  • Identifies, responds to, and assists Veterans in mental health crisis, using advanced de-escalation skills and knowledge of VA resources.
  • Collaborates with clinical staff (such as Veterans Justice Outreach, Suicide Prevention Coordinators, Veteran Crisis Line) to ensure a multidisciplinary and effective response for Veterans in crisis in all locations.
  • Responds to alarms, threats, and manages crowds (including hostile or agitated groups) to ensure safety and order on VA property and during events.
  • Inspects and assesses security countermeasures, including electronic access controls, CCTV, intrusion alarms, duress alarms, and related systems.

  • It requires stamina, physical agility, dexterity, and the strength to pursue, apprehend or detain persons who are often uncooperative, assaultive, and/or armed.

  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP) As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which we will evaluate your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest.
