About the Role

The Mental Health Service (MHS) Medical Director is responsible for the clinical performance of Mental Health (MH) in accordance with the mission of the Medical Center, Network, and VHA. Responsibility includes planning, organizing, evaluation, and management of all clinical aspects of assigned tasks and functions for Mental Health Service line psychiatrists and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs).

  • The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers.

  • The MH SL Medical Director supervises psychiatrists and APPs.
  • Serves as consultant to the MH SL Director and the community on policy, procedure, and problems, which relate to the product line services.
  • Duties include: Directs the development and maintenance of innovative cost-effective programs, which meet JCAHO, Network 23, VHA Headquarters, and medical center standards.
  • Develops and maintains continuing programs in the areas of professional peer review, organizational improvement, continuing education, scope of practice, clinical privileging and other quality improvement activities.
  • Provide expert consultation and treatment for patients with Psychiatric conditions Develop and implement individualized treatment plans for patients with Psychiatric conditions.
  • Provide patient and family education regarding Psychiatric conditions, treatment plans, and self-management strategies, utilizing educational tools and resources to enhance patient understanding and compliance.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including Cardiology APPs to ensure coordinated and comprehensive care.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case conferences if indicated, including discharge planning Communicate effectively with patients, families, and members of the healthcare team.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care in the electronic medical record system Provide clinical leadership and problem solving for clinical programs of which Mental health Service has direct responsibility.

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.

  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • You may be required to serve a probationary period.

  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
