About the Role
The New Mexico VA Health Care System is hiring a full-time General Surgeon to provide primary general surgery care to veterans. The New Mexico VA Medical Center is an active teaching hospital affiliated with the University of New Mexico. Qualified candidates must be eligible for a faculty appointment at the University of New Mexico based upon qualifications and experience.

- →The General Surgery attending is credentialed and privileged through the Medical Staff Office Supervisor under the auspices of the Chief of Staff in accordance with Medical Staff By laws.
- →Input on staff effectiveness and individual Performance Evaluations will be obtained by the Chief of Surgical Service.
- →Duties include, but are not limited to: Assures that a high degree of quality patient care is provided at all times.
- →Independently exercises creativity in solving problems without direct supervisory guidance to meet the varying needs of patients while under care in the General Surgery Clinic.
- →Exercises independent professional judgment in diagnosing the full range of complex general surgery conditions as well as planning and executing the necessary treatment programs to meet complex and frequent changes in treatment objectives.
- →Refers, when indicated, patients with multiple health problems to other providers within the facility and the VISN.
Requirements
- ✓Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- ✓All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- ✓Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
- ✓Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- ✓Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
- ✓Subject to background/security investigation.
- ✓Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
- ✓Acceptable form(s) of identification will be required to complete pre-employment requirements (https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/form-i-9-acceptable-documents).
- ✓Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued dentification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment.
- ✓Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
- ✓Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
- ✓You may be required to serve a probationary period.

- ✓Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
