About the Role

The VISN Chief Surgical Consultant (VCSC) is the medical official for VISN 20 Surgical Programs Oversight and is responsible for the quality of care and utilization of health care resources. The incumbent functions in an administrative role and accordingly, must have strong managerial and organizational skills as well as extensive clinical knowledge. ***This is a Detail Not to exceed 120 days, May be extended based on service line needs and mutual agreement.

What You'll Do

  • The VISN Chief Surgical Consultant will have proven clinical and leadership skills using these to build upon the strengths of the Service Line.
  • In collaboration with the Service Line Director, the Medical Director assists in the development, organization, implementation and support of high-quality patient care, medical education, and research.
  • Through persuasive and facilitative skills, influences the quality and effectiveness of surgical care leadership.
  • Communicates directly with the VISN 20 Chief Medical Officer (CMO) ensuring quality and coordination of patient care across the VISN.
  • The major duties and responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to the following: A physician actively engaged in the practice of surgery with VISN 20.
  • Evidence of leadership either by VA appointment (i.e.
  • Chief of Surgery, Chief of staff, etc.) or appointment at an academic affiliate institution (i.e.
  • Department Chair).
  • Committed to promoting efficient, high quality surgical care, support research and educational activities, and enhance communication between the field, Network office and VA Central Office.
  • A history of productive relationship with academic affiliates, including but not limited graduate medical education activities, programmatic relationships, and sharing of medical staff.
  • Capability to evaluate and facilitate quality improvement processes in surgical programs, including knowledge of performance measures/monitors, and internal and external accrediting /review bodies.
  • Willingness to perform site visits of surgical programs with the VISN on a routine and as needed basis.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with the National Surgery office.

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.

  • Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued dentification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • You may be required to serve a probationary period.

  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
