What You'll Do

  • This position is located within Environmental Management Services (EMS) of a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center.
  • The primary purpose of this position is to exercise technical and administrative supervision over subordinate workers in supporting and performing task (e.g., environment of care, textile distribution and training) associated with the EMS goals and objectives.
  • Tours of duty may vary depending on the internal department needs with weekdays, weekends, day and evening shift schedules.
  • Major Duties: Estimates and assigns time, equipment, material and manpower required for each assignment and project.
  • Informs higher level supervisors of the need to revise work schedules, re-estimating, labor, and other reasoning.
  • Plans, assigns, and coordinates daily and weekly work schedules and sequences of operations for assigned subordinates Motivates subordinates to operate as an effective working unit, redirecting the individual workers and assigning the work or tasks to be performed because of unanticipated circumstances.
  • Makes unscheduled and scheduled inspections of completed work to compare adherence to instructions and established practices.
  • Take necessary action to implement improvements or corrective actions to resolve work problems within assigned authority; recommend solutions to staffing problems; engineering requirements; and work operations directed by other supervisors.
  • Conducts training for subordinate employees consisting of housekeeping techniques and procedures; contact with and relationships with medical center patients' hospital visitors; and hospital staff, basic bacteriology, personal hygiene; EEO, Sexual Harassment; MSDS; Hazardous Chemicals and the Right to Know Law; Waste Management; and universal precautions.
  • Daily evaluates the performance of subordinate employees, determines training needs, recommends reassignments or promotions and conducts formal appraisals in accordance with the Performance Appraisal System.

  • The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial type buffers) weighing over 50 pounds.
  • The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination, and concentration as well as visual acuity to see dirt, dust and debris.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is normally performed indoors with adequate heat, light, and ventilation.
