About the Role

The position is located at the Syracuse VA Medical Center and works independently, under general supervision with wide latitude to exercise independent judgment. Healthcare Engineers demonstrate a close grasp of high order healthcare engineering and capital subject matter. Healthcare Engineers plan, execute and document complex, multi-faceted healthcare facility construction projects and inspections while prioritizing resources against approved scopes of work, contract documents and budgets.

What You'll Do

  • The position serves as a healthcare engineering advisor, engineer consultant, engineer designer, contract administrator, project manager, construction coordinator, and instructor during the design and construction of all projects assigned.
  • The position is responsible for providing healthcare engineering support to all assigned projects.
  • Functions or Scope of Assigned Duties: Performs Healthcare Planning/Design Management - The position determines the requirements for healthcare projects in relation to the needs of the Healthcare System, inclusive of the parent site, as well as off-site locations under the auspice of the Healthcare System, whether VA owned or leased.
  • Manages Healthcare Design and Construction Administration - The position uses independent seasoned engineering judgment in evaluating and performing scheduling and layout of operations, inspection, and surveillance of materials, methods, and equipment used in construction.
  • Performs Healthcare Construction Management and Post Project Activities - The position provides direction and guidance to the contractor for construction within the facility.
  • Medical Infrastructure Planning - The position assists on the medical center construction projects, space functional changes, and associated planning with respect to medical technologies and medical-related technologies.
  • Including site preparations for medical equipment, station level projects, non-recurring maintenance projects, and minor construction project designs.
  • Regulatory Agencies - The position assists in monitoring and reporting on construction and utilities management program that allows the Veterans Health Administration to meet the requirements set by accrediting organizations.
  • Network Security - The position shares responsibility in ensuring that information security issues are managed effectively for engineering databases and building automation systems.
  • Work Schedule: Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 4:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Healthcare Engineer/PD04029A Physical Requirements: The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, training rooms, and libraries.
  • The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
  • The incumbent must also work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • There may be occasional exposure to moderate risks or discomforts in storage areas or hazardous waste sites.
