You will serve as a General Engineer/Safety Compliance Engineer in the Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance (OVSC) in the Equipment Division. You will be responsible for helping to enforce one or more federal standards pertaining to motor vehicle equipment and/or motor vehicles. In addition, you will be responsible for conducting business in a manner that complies with NHTSA's internal business processes and policies.
What You'll Do
- →The primary duties of the engineer in the Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance fall into the following three overall categories: 1.
- →Compliance Test Program 2.
- →Investigations 3.
- →Support of other Agency offices In addition, you will also be responsible for performing numerous tasks associated with, and in support of these categories, to effectively enforce your assigned FMVSSs, including: Write and maintain detailed test procedures.
- →Assure target test dates are met, test reports are timely, accurate, and in the proper format, and that all elements of the test program are of sufficient quality to be used for compliance investigations.
- →Present investigation plans that are tailored to test failures or other indications of noncompliance.
- →Provide technical and administrative support to facilitate the contracting and execution of complex engineering programs at contract test laboratories.
- →Conduct relevant engineering analyses, using computer tools, film analysis, statistical methods, and other analytical tools deemed useful for the investigation.
- →Make presentations to upper management, presenting all the assembled data and making recommendations about how to proceed.
- →Act as Enforcement's representative on teams that conduct research and/or rulemaking to amend existing standards and promulgate new FMVSS and Regulations.
- →The ideal candidate for this position is highly self-motivated, possesses sound engineering judgment, demonstrated knowledge and expertise in engineering, and significant expertise working in a testing environment, preferably in the automotive field or field of child passenger safety.
- →The candidate should be capable of working cooperatively with other divisions within NHTSA and with organizations within the motor vehicle industry to accomplish the agency's goal of improved safety.
- →The candidate should be detail-oriented, well organized, and have strong writing skills.
- →As part of their daily responsibilities, the candidate should be willing to complete intensive paperwork, occasionally handle stressful situations involving highly visible matters with significant public interest, and manage conflict situations tactfully.

- ✓WRITING SAMPLE: Applicants may need to provide a writing sample they have authored.
- ✓Applicants may be asked to respond to one or more questions in writing during the interview.
- ✓BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: You will be required to complete a background/security investigation and meet preliminary requirements prior to onboarding.
- ✓PROBATIONARY PERIOD: You must complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).

- ✓COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE -- College-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.
