About the Role

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) seeks a dynamic leader to serve as Director of Hazard Identification. This senior executive will advance CPSC's mission to protect the public from unreasonable risks of injury associated with consumer products by leading strategic initiatives in hazard detection, compliance support, and technological innovation.

What You'll Do

  • The position is officially titled Deputy Assistant Executive Director (AED) for Risk Reduction.
  • The working/organizational title is Director for Hazard Identification.
  • This position is located in the Headquarters Office of the U.S.
  • Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Office of the Executive Director, Office of Risk Reduction (EXRR).
  • In this role, the Director for Hazard Identification will: Lead enterprise transformation initiatives to modernize hazard identification systems, strengthen organizational integration, and advance EXRR-wide digital and analytical capabilities.
  • Drive agency-wide modernization efforts, including NEISS transformation and improvements to data architecture, interoperability, analytics, and overall system performance.
  • Oversee injury and hazard data intake, integration, analysis, and dissemination to support early detection of consumer product hazards.
  • Advance the use of analytics, predictive modeling, and AI/ML tools to strengthen early warning and hazard detection.
  • Develop workforce capabilities in data science, analytics, and hazard identification through training, standards, guidance, and external partnerships.
  • Direct interdisciplinary research portfolios in chemical hazards, toxicology, chronic exposure pathways, economic analysis, and digital product safety.
  • Ensure coordinated and integrated work across Health Sciences, Economics, and Epidemiology to support a unified hazard identification strategy.
  • Supervise the AEDs for Health Sciences, Economics, and Epidemiology, setting strategic direction, performance expectations, and accountability measures.
  • Communicate emerging hazard trends, modernization progress, and research findings in internal and external forums.

Requirements

  • This is a Public Trust Position.
  • Employment in this position requires a background investigation.

  • One-year probationary period required for initial SES appointment.

  • We will compare information provided on the I-9 Form to records available from the U.S.
