About the Role
The Chief of Surgery serves as Clinical Service Chief of Surgery and is responsible for administrative and clinical management and operation of Surgery personnel and programs and achieving and maintaining facility adherence to VHA standards, state licensing standards, VA-OIG expectations as well as those of accrediting agencies such as The Joint Commission.

- →The Surgery Chief is involved in providing the framework for planning, directing, coordinating, providing and improving the health care services that are responsive to community patient needs and that improve patient health outcomes within the respective service.
- →The incumbent provides overall guidance and supervision to staff in the service.
- →Program Management Responsibilities Provides leadership and oversight for all Surgical care, ensuring quality, compliance, and performance.
- →Leads strategic planning, policy development, outcome monitoring, and workforce management.
- →Oversees credentialing, peer review, education, quality improvement, systems redesign, and collaboration across services to enhance Surgical care delivery.
- →Clinical Responsibilities Maintains full clinical privileges and provides Surgical care and clinical consultation.
- →Leads evidence-based practice, training, and policy implementation.
- →Sets a standard of professionalism and excellence for Surgery staff.
- →Ensures qualified staff are available for emergency care and maintains required BLS certification.
- →Supervisory Responsibilities Oversees all clinical providers supporting Surgery, ensuring effective supervision, training, and professional development.
- →Recruits and retains skilled, compassionate staff and collaborates with the Nurse Manager to hire, assign, and guide team members.
- →Coordinates clinical operations and training to maintain high-quality Surgical care.
Requirements
- ✓Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- ✓All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- ✓Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
- ✓Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- ✓Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
- ✓Subject to background/security investigation.

- ✓Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
- ✓Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).

- ✓Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
