About the Role

This position is located in the Federal Trade Commission (FTC or Commission), Bureau of Consumer Protection (BCP or Bureau), Division of Advertising Practices. The Division is responsible for consumer protection matters involving unfair or deceptive marketplace and advertising practices that cause consumer injury, including ensuring price transparency in enforcement verticals such as ticketing, healthcare, rental housing, and tech platforms.

What You'll Do

  • The Division of Advertising Practices is responsible for consumer protection matters involving unfair or deceptive marketplace and advertising practices that cause consumer injury, including ensuring price transparency in enforcement verticals such as ticketing, healthcare, rental housing, and tech platforms.
  • The Division monitors and develops effective enforcement strategies to address a range of marketplace and advertising techniques and media, including social media, and to protect kids online.
  • The Division's responsibilities also involve activities designed to increase the amount of accurate, reliable, and useful information available to consumers and activities designed to discourage, correct, or eliminate deceptive advertising practices, including providing guidance to businesses.
  • The incumbent directs, manages, and supervises all programs for which the Division is responsible.
  • This involves directing and supervising studies, investigations, and legal proceedings, including litigation, to ensure that the public is not affected by unfair or deceptive marketplace or advertising practices.
  • Division staff enforces the statutes and rules within its jurisdiction, engages in outreach and policy development, and educates consumers and businesses about emerging marketplace and advertising practices and techniques, including price transparency.
  • In addition, the staff analyzes the impact of current and potential legislative initiatives in the areas within its purview.
  • The incumbent plans, directs, controls, and reviews the work of a large staff involved in conducting investigations and studies, participating in litigation and consent negotiations, and promulgating trade regulation rules.
  • The incumbent performs short and long-range program planning, monitors the course of each project, recommends the initiation or closing of major programs and oversees the periodic and comprehensive evaluation of program goals and objectives.
  • The incumbent is also responsible for evaluating the success of specific cases and rulemaking proceedings.
  • The incumbent, guided by merit principles, interviews and hires an appropriate occupational mix of employees to accomplish BCP's mission; provides meaningful and challenging assignments to develop staff; evaluates performance and recommends awards, quality step increases, and promotions; and initiates disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • The incumbent reviews all final work product, stays abreast of ongoing cases through conferences and briefings with staff, provides guidance on legal strategy, and keeps the Director, Deputy Directors, and Division staff informed of policy changes, as well as on the status of work product.

Requirements

  • You must possess a J.D. or LL.B. degree from an accredited law school.
  • If you are qualifying for this position by substituting education or training for experience, submit a copy of your transcripts or equivalent.
  • An official transcript will be required if you are selected.
  • A college or university degree generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S.
