About the Role

This position is located in the Pre-service Unit within the Office of Medical Servies at the Office of Health Services, Peace Corps' Headquarters, Washington DC. Pre-service Unit is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring the process for reviewing Peace Corps Volunteer applicants for medical clearance for service. The incumbent will conduct comprehensive medical reviews of applicants with medical conditions requiring medical care and accommodation in the country of service.

What You'll Do

  • The Advanced Practice Nurse performs the following major duties: Independently performs certified nurse practitioner functions by reviewing and clearing Invitee medical cases in systems such as MAXx and providing medical guidance to support timely processing of the medical advisor queue.
  • Conducts clinical assessments of submissions from Pre-Service Nurses, ensures clarity and completeness of medical documentation, and collaborates with stakeholders to collect additional information needed for case evaluation.
  • Provides determinations and medical recommendations for standard to moderately complex cases, and elevates complex or atypical cases to supervisors or specialists to support consistent and timely decision-making.
  • Serves as an occupational health subject matter expert by contributing to the development of OSHA-compliant policies and procedures, advising on accommodations for Invitees with medical or mental health conditions, and supporting creation of country medical resource survey questions.
  • Leads quality improvement activities by reviewing and updating medical screening guidelines, interpreting policy impacts, adjusting medical country sort lists, and developing procedures and instructions for use of screening guidelines.
  • Supports agency compliance with the Rehabilitation Act by revising policies and guidelines to ensure individualized case review and serving as a subject matter expert to assist OGC and DOJ with development of compliant agency procedures.

Requirements

  • Applicants selected for this position are subject to the following Conditions of Employment: You must be a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years old.
  • Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered with Selective Service (see www.sss.gov).
  • Prior to employment, Peace Corps will review records for Returned Peace Corps Volunteers and former employees, as required by statutes 5 USC 3322 and 22 USC 2507b.
  • You must submit a signed statement acknowledging adherence to the Peace Corps Conditions of Employment before your first day.
  • You must successfully complete a Public Trust background investigation.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.
  • The initial appointment to this position cannot exceed five years.
  • A graduate or higher-level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required.
  • This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education(external link), Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs(external link), Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education(external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S.
  • Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained.
  • Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (external link) is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
  • Advanced Practice Nurse Positions: For Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) positions, applicants must possess a graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position.
  • Areas of specialties for positions include, but are not limited to, Acute Care, Anesthesia, Community Health, Family, Geriatric, Home Health, Midwifery, Neonatal, Oncology, Pediatric, Psychiatric, Allergy and Immunology, Women's Health, Cardiovascular, Dermatology, Occupational Health, Orthopedic, Respiratory, or other specialties identified for the position.
  • Foreign Education: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must provide evidence that your credentials have been evaluated by a private organization specializing in the interpretation of foreign education programs.
