About the Role

The acupuncturist may treat a wide range of conditions and acupuncture may be used alone or as an adjunct to traditional medical care. The acupuncturist includes the stimulation of specific points along the skin of the body using thin needles with or without the addition of electric stimulation. The duty location of this position is located at 2221 Martin Luther King Jr. Way; Oakland, CA 94612-1318.

What You'll Do

  • Assigned Duties The acupuncturist may use various techniques commonly taught in East Asian Medicine or Acupuncture schools.
  • Acupuncturists will work in interdisciplinary teams and collaborate with other existing services in the health care system, e.g., physical therapy, pain management, neurology, surgery, radiology etc.
  • Acupuncturists will accept feedback from other service providers and will consider the needs and preferences of other clinicians and existing services in the delivery of acupuncture.
  • The acupuncturist will utilize standard medical evaluation procedures and East Asian Medicine evaluation to formulate a differential diagnosis to develop an acupuncture treatment plan.
  • The acupuncturist shall incorporate the various training techniques taught within East Asian Medicine and acupuncture, and may apply safe and effective advanced acupuncture techniques.
  • The acupuncturist shall educate patients on self-management and lifestyle changes including nutrition, exercise, sleeping habits, stress management, mind body techniques and other matters related to acupuncture care.
  • The acupuncturist shall document and code information related to patient care in the VA's electronic health care record on a timely basis following VHA policies. iMed consent or equivalent consent shall be completed prior to acupuncture treatment where any needling procedure occurs.
  • The acupuncturist shall maintain up-to-date VHA and professional trainings.
  • Required meetings must be attended.
  • The acupuncturist will participate in teaching principles of acupuncture to staff, students and residents including journal clubs, grand rounds and in-service trainings.
  • The acupuncturist will review referrals, screen for appropriateness of care, and direct Veterans to others services when necessary.
  • The acupuncturist will collaborate with other clinicians in the system in the care of Veterans, when appropriate, for example around safety concerns and to troubleshoot other health services delivery issues or when clinical questions arise.
  • The acupuncturist is the subject matter expert on acupuncture and East Asian Medicine.
  • They will provide guidance on the delivery of acupuncture services within the health care system informed by current evidence and cost considerations.

  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
