About the Role

This position is part of the Deputy Administrator for Naval Reactors, Department of Energy. National Nuclear Security Administration Demonstration Project: This position is covered by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Demonstration Project. The NN-04 pay band is equivalent to the GS-14/15 grade levels. What You'll Do

  • As a Supervisory Nuclear Engineer (Group Head), NN-0840-04, you will: Serve as a Supervisor/Group Head, providing both technical and administrative supervision including planning/assigning work, planning/setting priorities, developing performance elements, evaluating performance, and providing advice, counsel, or instruction on other work and administrative matters.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for the research, development, design, acquisition, specification, construction, inspection, installation, certification, testing, overhaul, refueling, operating practices and procedures, maintenance, supply support, and ultimate disposition of naval nuclear propulsion plants.
  • Provide engineering advice, guidance and assistance to program offices or site managers on the interpretation and application of technical requirements and policies, evaluation of modifications and/or alternative approaches, and corrective actions as required.
  • Develop internal policy guidance and other documents which may lead to changes in policy or program direction.
  • Participate on ad-hoc teams comprised of other engineers in the government and the private sector in conducting broad policy studies.
  • Provide oversight and coordinating with diverse entities such as organizations within the Navy, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, reactor plant design laboratories, and shipyards.

Requirements

  • Basic Requirements: Degree: Engineering.
  • The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following: Professional registration or licensure -- Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico.
  • Absent other means of qualifying under this standard, those applicants who achieved such registration by means other than written test (e.g., State grandfather or eminence provisions) are eligible only for positions that are within or closely related to the specialty field of their registration.
  • For example, an applicant who attains registration through a State Board's eminence provision as a manufacturing engineer typically would be rated eligible only for manufacturing engineering positions.
  • Written Test -- Evidence of having successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
  • Specified academic courses -- Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A.
  • The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of an engineering program as described in paragraph A.
  • Ordinarily there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions.
  • (The above examples of related curricula are not all inclusive).
  • For Professional, Scientific and Engineering Positions: If qualifying on the basis of an alternate method, i.e., professional license, you must submit official documentation to support your claim with your application package.
  • If selected for the position you will be required to submit official transcripts prior to onboarding.
  • For positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying for a position by substituting education or training for experience, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts or equivalent.
  • Unofficial transcripts will be accepted that includes your name, the name of the educational institution, course title(s), number of credits, grade, and date of completion.
  • An official transcript will be required if you are selected.
