About the Role

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

What You'll Do

  • The Supervisory Clinical Laboratory Scientist has full supervisory responsibility for a large staff of non-supervisory personnel in the Specimen Acquisition, Send Outs & Phlebotomy department within Pathology & Laboratory services.
  • The incumbent performs the full range of supervisory duties, including but not limited to: Responsible for the day-to-day operational oversight, technical guidance and direct supervision of staff within the laboratory pre-analytic (specimen collection and processing) and referral lab send outs functions.
  • Accountable for directing departmental workflow, ensuring staff competency, and maintaining the highest standards of quality, accuracy, and customer service within the assigned laboratory service.
  • Serves as primary technical resource for service-related issues within laboratory processing providing expertise in the areas of customer service, practitioner support, problem resolution, and specimen requirements and handling.
  • Manage section staffing (FTEE and Contract) including selection of staff.
  • Prepares staffing schedules.
  • Conducts performance evaluations and maintains employee folders.
  • Consult with Laboratory Chief, Staff Pathologists, Manager, Supervisors and other program managers or staff of clinical services within the laboratory and throughout the facility to identify acquisition and send out testing needs and to analyze emerging trends and technology and adopts appropriate methods.
  • Skills in interpersonal relations and conflict resolution to deal with customers, employees, team leaders and managers.
  • Develop policies and procedures, training materials and other program materials, which ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies concerning specimen collection, send out, results reporting, and proficiency testing.
  • Develops and implements corrective action when deficiencies are identified.
  • Knowledge of specimen collections, send out and medical technology concepts, principles, practices, and methodologies sufficient to support the full range of laboratory testing performed within VISN22.
  • Knowledge of the types of quality surveillance needed to monitor the activities within the department that affect the quality of services provided.
  • Evaluates Specimen Acquisition and Send out activities to assess ongoing day-to-day compliance with established protocols and guidelines.
