About the Role

Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol Headquarters, Law Enforcement Operations Directorate, Foreign Operations in Washington, D.C . Additional selections may be made beyond the total number of vacancies specified using this vacancy announcement. Further selections may also be made for additional organizational divisions and/or units within the duty location(s) listed above.

What You'll Do

  • This position will allow you to use your expertise to prevent illegal entry of aliens into the United States by land, water, or air; enforce criminal provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Laws; and seek out and apprehend smugglers or aliens who are in the United States illegally.

  • This position starts at a salary of $147,899.00 (GS-14, Step 1) to $192,275.00 (GS-14, Step 10).
  • As a Supervisory Border Patrol Agent (Supervisory Assistant Chief), you will serve as a secondary law enforcement officer (under 5 U.S.C. 8336 (c) and 8412 (d)).
  • Typical duties will include: Serving as a supervisor to assigned USBP Headquarters Border Patrol Agents and professional staff, as a senior technical advisor the incumbent will work to develop, implement, and evaluate policies, programs, and operations for best practices.
  • Leading mission specific projects that may include enforcement operations, intelligence collection and reporting, administrative and logistical support, development of training programs, to facilitate and disseminate accurate and timely mission specific information of foreign operations and programs information to management.
  • Functioning as a liaison with other DHS operations, management, and program offices to include representatives and other federal, state, local, and foreign law enforcement agencies and directs sectors to gather time-sensitive information on field incidents, reports, briefings, or presentations for Senior Executive Leadership at the department or component level.
  • Supervising assigned personnel, sets priorities assigns work for completion.
  • Prepares performance standards and appraisals by communicating their progress towards the goal.
  • Recommends appraisals and determines disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Providing essential administrative and policy direction concerning overall project priorities and objectives through first-hand law enforcement experience, to include budgetary justifications for the Headquarters initiatives.

  • If you currently hold a grade level higher than the grade being announced, this action will result in a change to lower grade, and you may be returned at any time to the position held prior to this temporary assignment or to the same or similar position at the lower grade level.
  • Return to your original location will be prioritized, but is not guaranteed.
  • At management's discretion, you may be permanently placed to this position without further competition.

  • The USBP Rotation Program IOP dictates the terms of rotating out of the NTE assignment once the assignment has concluded.
