About the Role

Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol, Big Bend Sector, Law Enforcement Operations - Specialty Programs - Canine, located in Marfa, TX. Additional selections may be made beyond the total number of vacancies specified using this vacancy announcement. Further selections may also be made for additional organizational divisions and/or units within the duty location(s) listed above.

What You'll Do

  • This position will allow you to use your expertise to prevent illegal entry of aliens into the United States by land, water, or air; enforce criminal provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Laws; and seek out and apprehend smugglers or aliens who are in the United States illegally.

  • This position starts at a salary of $109,383.00 (GS-13, Step 1) to $142,199.00 (GS-13, Step 10).
  • As a first-line Supervisory Border Patrol Agent (Canine Instructor) typical duties include: Directing and supervising Border Patrol Agents and canine handlers in the performance of line watch, sign cutting, traffic/transportation checks, interdiction operations, and specialized enforcement activities to detect and prevent illegal entry of persons, narcotics, contraband, terrorists, and weapons.
  • Planning, prioritizing, and assigning operational work, to include scheduling, leave approval, performance evaluation, and redeployment of personnel and technology based on current intelligence and risk analysis.
  • Instructing, certifying, and mentoring canine teams by developing, delivering, and revising basic and advanced canine detection training, ensuring compliance with canine policy, certification standards, and operational directives.
  • Coordinating and overseeing the collection, analysis, and dissemination of tactical and strategic intelligence, and collaborating with other Federal, state, local, and foreign law enforcement partners to enhance enforcement operations.
  • Overseeing case preparation, evidence handling, and court-related activities, ensuring timely, accurate documentation; acts as an expert witness and works with counsel on legal challenges involving the canine program.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S.
  • Canine Instructor Requirement: If you are applying for the SBPA Sector Canine Instructor position, you must have successfully completed the USBP Canine Instructor course, and you must hold and maintain a current USBP Canine Instructor certification.
