About the Role

The VA Long Beach Healthcare System (VALBHS) is seeking a CLC Staff Psychologist to serve within the Mental Health service.

  • You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of your start date.
  • Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

  • Primary job functions include the provision of direct psychological patient care and consultation services for various CLC neighborhoods and units.
  • The CLC psychologist will work closely with interdisciplinary teams to address psychosocial stressors and mental health needs of Veterans who require skilled nursing needs, physical rehabilitation, are in the process of securing long-term placement, or are in our hospice unit for end-of-life care.
  • Common psychology referrals include requests for individual psychotherapy, family education/support, cognitive screens and brief neuropsychology assessments, capacity evaluations, and behavior management support.
  • The CLC psychologist will also provide education/support to medical teams on dementia, mental illness, and other topics in mental health.
  • Long Beach VA has a robust psychology training program, and the CLC psychologist will play an active role in the clinical training and supervision of pre-doctoral students/interns and/or post-doctoral psychology fellows.
  • Duties include, but are not limited to: Providing a full range of psychological assessment services and diagnoses mental heal disorders.
  • Providing education to patients, family members, and significant others.
  • Providing comprehensive, evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions, including individual, family, and group psychotherapy.
  • Developing, implementing, and documenting the psychotherapeutic treatment plan for an assigned caseload of patients.
  • Assisting the Mental Health Care Group Chief and/or Chief Psychologist in the execution of ongoing program evaluation and data-driven quality improvement projects to monitor the effectiveness of the clinical program.
