About the Role

NIST is seeking a Polymeric Materials Scientist whose focus will be on developing measurement platforms that quantify the generation of residual stress in the polymeric underfill and compression molding resins that are used as semiconductor packaging applications. This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.

What You'll Do

  • The major duties of the Polymeric Materials Scientist position involve developing and applying measurement science to quantify residual stress in polymeric materials used in semiconductor packaging and evaluating the effects on material performance and reliability.
  • This position will: Develop measurement platforms and instrumentation to quantify residual stress generation in polymeric underfill and compression molding resins used in semiconductor packaging.
  • Conduct experimental studies to understand stress development during polymer curing, including the effects of environmental stressors such as temperature and relative humidity, and identify methods to minimize residual stress.
  • Adapt and apply laser-based ablation and adhesion test methods to evaluate how residual stress and environmental conditions affect adhesion to semiconductor-relevant substrates, and disseminate findings through publications and presentations.

Requirements

  • This position has an education requirement.
  • Transcripts must be submitted to validate that the education requirement has been met.
  • Unofficial transcripts will be accepted in the application package.
  • However, an official copy will be required before a final offer of employment.
