About the Role
Registered Respiratory Therapists in VHA perform or supervise work concerned with administering respiratory care and life support to patients with cardiopulmonary deficiencies, diseases and abnormalities.
What You'll Do
- →The Registered Respiratory Therapist provides care based on the physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety related criteria appropriate to the age of patients served in their assigned area.
- →This entails knowledge of human growth and developmental ability to assess and interpret data and provide care; communication skills necessary to interpret response to treatment and ability to involve family/significant other in decision making related to plan of care.
- →Duties and Responsibilities: Includes, but not limited to: The Registered Respiratory Therapist can administer oxygen and aerosolized prescribed medications using standard respiratory equipment such as nasal cannulas, masks, humidifiers, nebulizer devices, mechanical ventilators to patients with and without artificial airways.
- →Initiates and monitors the delivery and effects of mechanical ventilation under the direction of authorized providers, both invasive and non-invasive.
- →Performs weaning parameters when patients are on mechanical ventilation.
- →Collects/induces sputum for specimens upon written order by provider.
- →Instructs patients on the proper use of incentive spirometry, purse lip breathing and diaphragmatic breathing exercises.
- →During cardiac arrest, maintains the airway and ventilates using the oral airway, bag mask techniques, Laryngeal mask airway (LMA), or performs emergency intubations.
- →Cleans, sets up, and verifies the operation of mechanical respiratory equipment such as flow meters, humidifiers, ventilators, CPAP/BIPAP, and specialty gases and regulators.
- →Correct minor machine malfunctions and apparent problems or sent to Biomedical for repair.
- →Records pertinent data associated with treatment such as time and type of therapy administered, equipment and medications used, a patient progress, and general observations of vital signs.
- →Perform patient assessment and make recommendations to prescribing physician if indicated.
- →The RRT will provide continuing education to other health care providers throughout the facility.
- →Will complete the inpatient home oxygen set up, ensure the order and charting are complete, and alert the home oxygen vendor of the pending set up.
