About the Role

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

What You'll Do

  • VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package: VA Nurse Total Rewards The Registered Nurse (RN) Care Manager (CM) serves as a RN within the Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP).
  • The RNCM provides comprehensive coordination of care to Veterans, utilizing specialized skills and knowledge in a relatively independent fashion.
  • Major duties include, but are not limited to: Documenting and completing notes, and encounters into the EMR, on the day of service.
  • Assesses educational needs and provides education and brief interventions to patients and assures longitudinal follow-up, while also assessing response to and side-effects from treatment.
  • Provides direct advice regarding symptoms of depression, anxiety, psychosis, and substance use disorders to patients, including supportive counseling and education to patients, spouses, caregivers, and families, as well as skills building, managing symptoms and treatment adherence through individual or group modality.
  • Completes structured diagnostic and clinical assessments for Veterans using the nursing process which requires knowledge of medical and psychiatric terminology, diagnostic categories, and chart review.
  • Develops and updates the individualized multidisciplinary treatment plan with specific interventions to achieve recovery based measurable goals and objectives based upon assessment and evaluation of effectiveness of interventions.
  • Completes safety assessment and safety plan at intervals defined by risk level appropriate to nursing scope of practice.
  • Completes clinical measures that are appropriate for MH as part of clinical assessments, treatment, and care planning.
  • This includes determining the appropriate level of care need for patients not in treatment and the ability to understand the variety of clinical options available through the clinic, medical center, and local community.
  • Coordinates care of the Veterans and facilitates the effective utilization of community resources.
  • Contacts patients through written correspondence, tele-health, and telephone calls, and conducts follow-up interviews.
  • Assigns and reassigns the Mental Health Treatment Coordinator of patients and facilitates transfer of care when appropriate.
  • Participates in patient and family education, utilizing various ways of communication that include secure messaging.

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.

  • Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
