About the Role

This position is assigned to the Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) Community Programs (N922) Branch; Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) Recreational Fleet and Family Readiness Support Services (N94); Commander, Navy Region Hawaii, at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam (JBPHH), Honolulu, HI. The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of duties in support of the MWR recreation program. The incumbent provides instruction on boating safety, sailing and windsurfing.

What You'll Do

  • Major Duties: Provides instruction on boating safety, sailing and windsurfing.
  • Prepares lesson plans associated with sailing instruction for beginners, intermediate and advanced students.
  • Teaches private one on one and group lessons with no more than 12 students per class.
  • Teaches basic sailing skills, rules of the road; care and maintenance of sails, lines, safety equipment; defines storm signals, navigational aids and buoys.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Supervisory Controls: Works under the general supervision of the Outdoor Recreation Manager.
  • Works independently with minimal supervision under the confines of departmental and organizational guidelines, plans and policies.
  • Refers questionable or unusual problems to Management.
  • Guidelines: Incumbent complies with prescribed procedures and follows oral and written instructions.
  • Incumbent is able to keep up with the normal flow of work.
  • All duties are accomplished in a thorough, accurate, and timely manner.
  • Complexity: Incumbent is expected to learn, apply and comply with procedures applicable to the day-to-day operations of the Outdoor Recreation Program.
  • Incumbent is to put forth extra effort during busy periods.
  • Incumbent must know the rules of the Harbor and provide accurate information to customers/students.
