What You'll Do

  • This position is located in the Facilities Management staff at the National Gallery of Art.
  • The incumbent functions as a Painter who employs skilled techniques in the preparation of a variety of surfaces and in the application of coating materials to obtain a desired result.
  • Duties for this position include.
  • Paints both interior and exterior surfaces such as offices, corridors, stairwells, floors, hallways, cabinets, bookcases, walls, windows, gutters, and cornices.
  • Surfaces may be wood, metal, glass, fiber, concrete, or plastic and may require one or more of a variety of coating materials such as paint, shellac, varnish, enamel, lacquer, stain, bonding agents, pre-coating material, epoxy resin or other special application.
  • Prepares surfaces for new coating materials and removes the old finish, if neccessary, by sanding, scraping, brushing, or by using steel wool, paint remover or burning.
  • Builds up, shapes and levels surface with plastics, patching compounds, synthetic resins and by applying pre-coating agents such as alkali compounds.
  • Prepares coating materials by tinting, toning, matching, blending and mixing various additives to achieve the desired colors/tones/shades.
  • Applies the coating material using accepted trade practices and techniques and ensures that the finish meets the desired requirements for match, texture, thickness and decoration.
