About the Role

This position is a Motor Vehicle Operator assigned to the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center, Transportation Section of Facilities Management Service. Must possess a State Operator's Permit, Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Medical Certificate endorsement. Licensing information must be clearly stated on your resume or you will not be considered for this position.

What You'll Do

  • The Motor Vehicle Operator assigned to the Transportation Section within Facilities Management Service at the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center.
  • The position is responsible for operating tractor-trailer combinations used to transport laundry, supplies, and other materials essential to medical center operations.
  • Performs duties requiring a high degree of skill in maneuvering large vehicles in congested and confined areas, while ensuring compliance with VA safety requirements and state and local traffic laws.
  • The operator is responsible for ensuring cargo is properly secured, vehicles are safely operated, and transportation missions are completed efficiently and without incident.
  • The Motor Vehicle Operator works under general supervision and is expected to independently carry out assignments, exercise judgment in route selection, and maintain safety standards during all transportation operations.
  • Additional Duties include not limited to: Operates truck tractors with semi-trailers exceeding 35,000 pounds to transport materials such as laundry and supplies.
  • Drives on highways, winding roads, and in congested areas, applying defensive driving techniques.
  • Performs difficult backing and positioning of tractor-trailer combinations in tight loading docks and confined spaces.
  • Manipulates dual braking systems to prevent hazards such as jackknifing and ensures safe maneuvering.
  • Loads and unloads cargo, ensuring proper weight distribution and balance.
  • Inspects cargo prior to departure to ensure it is secured and will not shift during transport.
  • Arranges cargo to support safe unloading and prevent damage.
  • Performs routine maintenance and inspection of vehicles, including cleaning and safety checks.
  • Identifies mechanical issues and reports needed repairs or preventive maintenance to the supervisor to ensure vehicles are maintained in a safe and operational condition.
