This position is located in the Salisbury VA Health Care System (SVAHCS), Kernersville Health Care Center (HCC) in Kernersville, NC and performs a wide variety of duties involving specimen collection, processing, and preparation of specimens for transport, while assuring accuracy of identification and integrity of specimens for routine and specialized testing throughout all processes.
What You'll Do
- →***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Major duties and responsibilities include: Performs Phlebotomy using appropriate and established venipuncture techniques and universal precautions, being careful to avoid areas close to nerve bundles and arteries.
- →Collects samples with knowledge of the many special anticoagulants and testing requirements for routine and complex testing both pre- and post-collection, being careful to choose the correct sample and tube types.
- →Properly selects containers for 24-hour urine collections according to the testing requirements and appropriate preservatives necessary.
- →Assesses patient at all times during and after collection for any adverse responses.
- →May be trained to administer new employee or random employee drug screen specimen collection for testing.
- →Reports all accidents, near accidents, injuries, work related illness and other emergencies to appropriate supervisory personnel and completes documentation as required.
- →Assesses integrity of the specimen and determines appropriate action to address any inadequate specimens.
- →Performs a variety of routine laboratory procedures including volumetric measurements, preparation of solutions (i.e. glucose and lactose tolerance test solutions), and preparation of samples for analysis by centrifugation.
- →Assists with monitoring of inventory and maintenance of adequate phlebotomy supplies and thorough cleaning/disinfecting of work areas.
- →Maintains and controls laboratory records with accurate documentation of orders, times collected, and initials of collector.
- →Files all collection records promptly and assures confidentiality with locking of storage drawers/cabinets.
- →Performs other duties as assigned.
