About the Role

This position is located in the Phlebotomy Department of Pathology and Laboratory Service at the Dayton VA Medical Center in Dayton, OH. Performs a range of diagnostic laboratory support duties such as collection and labeling of specimens for the laboratory.

What You'll Do

  • ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** MAJOR DUTIES: Performs routine repetitive diagnostic procedures such as venipuncture for collection of blood specimens and collections/acceptance of other body fluids such as urine or sputum.
  • Uses proper sterile techniques for collection of samples.
  • Adheres to special instructions, such as transport on ice, deliver immediately, protect from light, etc.
  • Verifies the patient as the individual denoted on the request/labels using two approved forms of identification and assures all tubes are labeled with the two approved forms of identification, date and time of draw, and first initial, last name of individual obtaining specimen.
  • Evaluates the suitability of all collected specimens for testing.
  • Assesses patient's physical and emotional condition with respect to procedure being performed.
  • Receives and processes specimens from the Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC).
  • Reviews manifests and compares to specimens submitted.
  • Receives specimens and resolves all issues.
  • Assists in the Chemistry department of the Clinical Testing Unit (CTU) pouring off urine specimens into the appropriate tubes for testing.
  • The incumbent loads the correct specimen onto the automation track of the appropriate analyzer for testing with knowledge of all lane specifications such as tube size, tube anticoagulant, type of tube and condition of tube.
  • Process and perform microbiology set-up independently.
  • Uses hospital computer system to accurately perform routine work such as reviewing and accepting lab order, gathering information required to complete assigned duties, and researching and resolving problems.
  • Receives and directs patients, instructs patients in the proper collection of specimens such as midstream clean-catch urine collection, 24-hour urine collection, stool collection, and collection of specimens for culture and sensitivity, occults bloods, etc.
