These positions perform as a Medical Technician in the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service (P&LMS) at the Sioux Falls Veterans Administration Health Care System, performing a variety of functions including accessioning specimens into computer system; collecting and evaluating patient specimens; answers questions relative to specimens; instructing and assisting patients; and preparing specimens to be sent to reference labs.
What You'll Do
- →***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** NOTE: Intermittent employment is defined as non-fulltime employment in which employees serve under an excepted or competitive service appointment without a regularly scheduled tour of duty.
- →A position with an intermittent work schedule is sporadic and unpredictable so that a tour of duty cannot be regularly scheduled in advance.
- →Intermittent positions offer health insurance only if the employee is expected to work at least 130 hours per month for at least 90 days.
- →NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY appointment (not-to-exceed 6 months from date of hire).
- →This appointment may be renewed for additional service in accordance with Agency needs for 1 additional year.
- →Temporary positions offer health insurance (if the employee is expected to work at least 130 hours per month for at least 90 days) but do not offer life insurance or retirement benefits and may be terminated at any time before the expiration date.
- →The appointment to a Temporary position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.
- →Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Using proper patient identification and sample labeling.
- →Collecting blood or urine specimens and ensures safe, non-traumatic processes are used to maintain patient safety and assure specimen quality.
- →Performing blood collection using venipunctures, arterial punctures and capillary finger sticks with a minimal number of failures, patient bruising, or required repeat collection, ensuring that samples are submitted to the clinical laboratory with the least possible delay.
- →Performing specimen collection in the emergency room, hospital rooms, extended care rooms and outpatient specimen collection area.
- →Performing specimen performed independently without supervision; however, supervisor and medical technologists are available for consultation.
- →Following standard operating procedures for guidance in specimen collection.
- →Identifying tests that require special handling conditions and appropriately performs proper specimen collection.
