About the Role

This Medical Technician position is in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Services at VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System in Ann Harbor, Michigan. The position serves as a phlebotomist in the clinical laboratory, specimen receiving in Central Receiving department, and processing technician in the Send Out area. This position is to cover Ann Arbor Medical Center and rotate to the CBOC location such as Canton on a as needed basis.

What You'll Do

  • ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Major duties include, but are not limited to: Preparing the collection site and drawing blood cultures utilizing sterile field techniques during ward rounds at specified times.
  • Venipuncture procedures performed on the wards involve drawing blood from a patient in various states, such as the comatose, disabled, sedated, patients in traction, who may have possible other complicating conditions.
  • Aware of proper procedures to be followed in case of incidents of fainting and convulsions.
  • Responsible for ensuring precise identification of patients by following designated three tier identification protocols.
  • Responsible for patient care activities for adult and geriatric patients.
  • Responsible for knowing and following universal precaution protocol.
  • Maintain stocks and supplies for blood and blood culture collection.
  • Trains new employees as assigned by supervisor.
  • Attends training and educational seminars as needed and completes computerized educational modules as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
  • Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
  • Work Schedule: Full-Time; Monday through Friday; 8:30 am to 5:00 pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized.
