About the Role

The Medical Technician functions primarily in the area of Phlebotomy for the Clinical Pathology Laboratories at the VA Medical Center in Portland, Maine. The person in this position carries out duties in phlebotomy and specimen processing and responds to assigned Supervisors. S/he performs work in a clinical laboratory providing a range of blood drawing procedures, waived tests including finger-stick based testing, and other minor test as assigned.

What You'll Do

  • ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Major duties include, but are not limited to.
  • Performs standard diagnostic tests or procedures such as venipuncture and finger stick to collect blood specimens according to written protocols or as directed by the physician or other professional staff.
  • Performs tests of low or moderate complexity such as a range of waived tests, and preparation of slides, smears, cultures, etc.
  • Supports Anatomic Pathology through specimen accession, generating labels, printing cassettes, and brief note and photograph taking, as directed by Pathologists.
  • Enters all requests into the hospital computer system using multiple formats.
  • Performs all aspects of sample storage, packaging, and other requirements regarding the shipment of diagnostic specimens and infectious substances adhering to Federal DOT (Department of Transportation) and IATA (International Air Transport Association) Regulations.
  • Verifies the patient as the individual denoted on the request and labels all tubes with the patient's name, social security number, date, and time, to ensure proper identification.
  • Draws blood by venipuncture or finger stick from medical center inpatients and outpatients for requested laboratory tests.
  • Adheres to safety, infection control, and universal precautions always while drawing blood.
  • This includes such things as replacing bed rails, removing tourniquets, and wearing gloves.
  • Must know CPR and first aid procedures for the care of patients who become sick, suffer a cardiac arrest or faint while having blood drawn.
  • Answers incoming calls for Laboratory Services.
  • Prepares referral specimens for shipment.
  • Maintains computer files and manually printed order entry forms.
