About the Role

The Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) position is located at the John Cochran Division, VA St. Louis Health Care System, St. Louis, MO. The incumbent will process a full range of Reusable Medical Devices (RMD) from simple surgical grade stainless steel to extremely complex devices that require knowledge of its identification, labeling, use, function, troubleshooting, testing, maintenance, and selection of accurate reprocessing methods (titanium, robotics, microsurgical, etc).

What You'll Do

  • The Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) will be responsible for reprocessing of RMD in support of all clinical services provided within the two divisions, both in the surgical suites and outpatient areas.
  • Care and attention to detail are critical.
  • The MST must demonstrate a knowledge of surgical instruments used in the operating room and procedural settings.
  • The incumbent must have a basic understanding of event related packaging as it relates to sterility.
  • The MST must possess knowledge and understanding of sterilization and cleaning equipment.
  • Must be able to communicate both orally and in writing to document in various situations.
  • The incumbent must demonstrate a basic knowledge of medical terminology in order to assemble general and specialty instrument sets.
  • The MST must possess knowledge of the equipment and process all steps in the process of decontamination and sterilization of RME.
  • Each MST must be familiar with all of the duties performed in SPS, as well as standard operating procedures and manufacturers guidelines.
  • Major duties and responsibilities of the position: Provides inventory support and physically maintains stock at secondary inventory locations for SPS.
  • Provides sterilization, preparation, and decontamination support for the medical center.
  • Properly disassembles supply items avoiding damage or unnecessary wear.
  • Utilizes Standard Operating Procedures and manufacturer instructions during required troubleshooting.- Uses seasoned judgment to ensure minimum potential for damage to equipment.
  • Removes gross contamination, pre-sterilizes biological contamination and decontaminates all reusable supplies and equipment.
